"My mechanic(ficht mechani

"My mechanic(ficht mechanic) has been stuck on my motor for 4 weeks and has run out of solutions.
The motor was bought used with 250 hours on it and a reflashed EMM from EDI tech. It ran fine for the first hour then it died. I was pulled in. The fuel it ran on was 1 year old (6gallons)and not stabilized dilueted with 30 gallons of fresh fuel. there was some clear alchohol that filled the water/fuel sepperated that was dumped and then the motor ran again. At that time it was run on a surface tank with fresh fuel and injector cleaner. it ran for another 1/2 hour then died and check engine light came on. Since then it wont run above idle and continues to throw code 16 everytime it is reset.
The crankshaft position sensor was repalced, timing set from 30 to 45 thousands, plugs replaced and the fuel rail. The motor continues to throw the code 16. it will run at low RPM but dies when idled up.
Any ideas????????????
Thanks
Dave"

"Encountered a similar problem

"Encountered a similar problem on the earlier 150/175, and nut sure it might be relevant in your case. Anyway i found that the problem was caused by 'induction shocks' into the CPS cable from most normally the spark plug cable. The solution to the problem was to cut open the cable harness and re-route the CPS cable to the ECM in from of the ECU, or at least 'isolate' it from the wire harness of the engine.."

"did u get..all that..??...his

"did u get..all that..??...his 'ficht' mech, should have done all that...my hats off to all the younger guys, that have to learn all that bs...i can remember,...when power packs,...were the 'new' technology....and baffling to the 50 y/olds...i got certified in dfi technology,in 03,...and between that, and the owner of the shop, being too much like me,..i left, and opened up my own shop,.again....we dont service any fi or di engines,by choice....i leave that huge hd-ache to the big dealerships, and younger guys."

"What a headach this motor has

"What a headach this motor has become. I will run the induction shocks by my mechanic Monday.
Morton, Where you also throwinga a Code 16 on your motor when you had that problem?

jwbmarine,Im giving this guy one last shot then getting it to someone else. Bitch is Its cost me $800 already and I still have a dead boat thats no closer to fixed!!

Is there anthing else he may be missing?"

"I do not remember what code i

"I do not remember what code it gave, but it was all about the routing of the CPS cable to the ECM. It was in fact later changed after I gave a 'demonstration' to the instructor, Patric, at in Belgium during one of our training sessions.
To JWB, I have this 'naughty' comment:
Why do you think that GM bellied up?
To many with your attitude refused in time to accept that times are changing. Development can not be stopped. The Fichts, E-Tech's, HPDI's, Optimax are basically nothing but an old Otto engine and the 'old' experience is needed. Letting the new 'geeks' take over without the old experienced to take part, the wheel will only be re-invented and time lost. It is nothing 'magic' in how these systems works, just take some time to learn and combine. I have the feeling that David's mech is one that has not quite got the hang of it yet, but at least he is trying. (Unfortunately on avid' expense!)"

"yeah,...i saw it.............

"yeah,...i saw it............................

.not
against,technology,..love the new engines,in fact...but at my age,and past experience,is what i was speaking of,...i dont want to learn,all that stuff....in simple terms,for the simple minded.............touche........."

"No offense intended, but coul

"No offense intended, but could not resist.
The Ficht engine got quite a beating, and partly it was deserved, but to me the sad part was that most of the beating came from 'within the ranks'. Why?
probably that to few to the extra mile to dive into the systems and technologies involved.
What will be interesting is to see what happens to the inboard engines in a few years time. I predict 4-bangers with variable timing and 2-3 liters with 300+++Hp, all with Japanese symbols and electronics like a medium computer shop.
Would love to see the faces of the 'old' V8 mechs!!!"

"Morten, I think you are under

"Morten, I think you are underestimating the potential of the E-Tech technology. They are outdoing the 4 strokes in efficiency and use even less oil. BRP has it made with Evinrude. They use a voice coil to actuate the injector for the dfi. It's pretty cool stuff.

Wasn't it the Ficht technology that basically finished off OMC? The motors would run lean at a certain rpm and overheat and burn up. Seen a few of them motors when I was in college in '02."

"'ha ha!! could you imagine a 4 cylinder E-tech INBOARD!!! LOL'
No joke!

'OMC's V-4, two cycle 80 HP stern drive called the OMC-480 paled by the MerCruiser four cycle automotive engines with 125 to 200 HP.'
The wheel has been invented long time ago. In addition there was drive system called 'Cresent Drive 45' made by Archimedes Penta in Sweden. Not only was it a 2-stroke 'inboard' hoked onto a drive with a pulling propeller, but it even had a 2-apeed gearbox!"

would love to see a v-4 two cy

would love to see a v-4 two cycle now!!! Did the old OMC have power valves? it sure as heck didn't have DFI like the E-Tech technology. I'd be betting that a new version with all the fancy doo dads on it would kick some butt. Skidoo now uses Evinrudes e-tech technology. The 600 E-Tech keeps up to the non E-Tech 800.

"And the best part:
Whatever

"And the best part:
Whatever they say, E-tech is nothing but a further developed FICHT!!

"I hope David excuses this &#3

"I hope David excuses this 'walk about' in history. I do not want to hi-jack his thread. But while we are waiting for him to be back, why not?

'never did learn much about it... was already outta date when I was in training.'
This is in a way a 'sad' statement. There is a reason why history is important in education. Every link of information in the chain of development is important. Miss a link, break the chain, and you loose the continuity. It goes in this business as well as law, medicine or whatever. Remember that history has a tendency of repeating itself. In this case a problem might all of a sudden occur that used to be a 'big' problem earlier. It is nothing like experience, and if you do not have it yourself, it may be cheaper to learn from others mistakes."

You know what? That was the problem at the last shop I worked at... No one with the experience and knowledge worked there. Had to learn it all on my own and there was no one to guide me in right direction or get tips from. I have already made the odd mistake or simple goof up that could have been avoided had there been some where to learn some of the older tech. They only teach you a bit of the older stuff in College and they didn't get into problems and common fixes for the older stuff. The next shop I work at is gonna have an experienced tech with good years of exp under his belt. Ya don't always learn from the boss...usually it's the older wiser guy in the shop!!! I also read about the Ficht just now...googled it. You were right...it looks like the E-Tech does it very similarily but with more electronics to get SAME result. Except this time computer can control more variables and motors don't burn up from excess soot build up. Talk about an EXPENSIVE lesson!!!

"'That was the problem at

"'That was the problem at the last shop I worked at... No one with the experience and knowledge worked there'
This was the 'old' way of transferring experience.
I'm afraid you may have to start digging at the grave yard to get what you want in the near future.
The 'new' way is is called:Google, Yahoo, Bing and even this board. Computers are a must today, not only for diagnosing the engines, but for education and experience. Not only the engines are changing, the whole way of working as mechanic too.
What a beauty if we may be able to 'freeze' down some of the old mechs still around, operate in a USB contact or 3G phone, give them a HTTP address and access the knowledge!"

"Alright, i passed the info of induction shocks onto my mechanic and he is going to give it a shot. So when this motor is up and running would you guys suggest me selling it? or just find a better mechanic LOL
THIS MOTOR IS KILLING ME!"

"No engine is better or worse

"No engine is better or worse than the local service it gets.
If there are no 'assistance' locally, it might be better to replace. On the other hand why sell if it works?"
