1999 Evinrude 70hp 4 stroke fuel problem or ??

Have owned this motor for three years and the first year it ran beautifully. Last year it started to fade out under full power but ran good otherwise. However it smelled of gas at idle and I could see fuel coloring the water. This year it began to die at idle and again cut out at higher RPM. I changed the water separator/fuel filter which did have water in it but didn't help....maybe it ran a little worse. I changed the low pressure filter and added injector cleaner to gas but now it doesn't even run at more than idle.

I removed the low pressure fuel pump and it seemed to be working....squirted gas when I pumped it by hand. Now I'm wondering about the high pressure filter or the vapor separator with the small screen in it. I have no diagnostic equipment, no way to check fuel pressure, and no one around here knows anything about my "old" motor.

This is a motor that has seen less than 10 hours of use since I bought it three years ago. What would make it change so drastically other than fuel issues?

BTW i do not have any gauges attached to it and I have never heard one little "beep" from it. (My manual says it is supposed to beep when I turn the key.) I am reluctant to remove the intake manifold in order to get at the vapor separator, because it looks a bit complicated and I'm not at all sure it would make a difference.

Any advice would be appreciated.....
