Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums and would like some guidance on how to fix my fathers boat. Bringing it to a shop is not an option financially so hopefully you guys can point me in the correct direction.
History/Symptoms
We were having trouble with the computer overheating and shutting down the engine. We cleaned out the lines (turns out it was dirt dobbers clogging up the line with dirt)
So my brother cleaned out the lines and had the boat ready for my dad to pickup and when he started it for my dad is when we got to our current problem.
The engine fires up and immediately jumps to 2500-3000 rpms. You can increase the throttle from there but it wont idle below 2500ish.
We (my brother and I) have checked linkages, the tps (ohms check) seemed fine. We have changed the fuel water separator. Fuel pump seems fine and pressure seems fine as well.
We have been told that it is either a vacuum leak or fuel getting into the crankcase.
If anyone wants to help I can do everything to the engine that is suggested and I can follow up with pictures and status.
I would really like to get the boat going for my father so any help is much appreciated!

Run the motor for a few minutes with the air box off. Does the motor have the original fuel pump on it? You can tell by the fuel pump looking like a regular small pump (conventional) engine on the fuel bracket in the center front of the engine. It will have a green diaphragm. Pull the pulse hose off the block (drives the fuel pump). If there is any fuel present the fuel pump has a ruptured diaphragm. Fuel is getting into the crankcase. ANY fuel (even vapors) at low speeds with cause the idle to be high.
The problems is you can't buy just the regular pump (maybe eBay?). There is a kit now $$$.

I stand corrected (thank goodness)! A rebuild kit #439881 is available right here on MarineEngine.com. Reference #50 on the 1999 lift pump assy. Actually hope you have the old pump now?

Thank you for the reply!

I have pulled the vacuum lines (2) that come in/out of the lift pump because I too suspected fuel getting past the diaphram. It had no change when I started the motor. Then I also pulled the vacuum hose associated with the oil injection system with no change.
I also pulled apart the entire lift pump/oil injection system with the exception of pulling apart the lift pump itself. (I couldnt get the lift pump apart and I didn't want to damage anything.

You could have a leaky fuel injector, but that is going to be harder for you to figure out. They are fairly easy to pull on that model. You can compare the spark plugs first (if you haven't replaced then lately). You are looking for one that is real sooty compared to the others. If you pull injectors the nose of the injector will be real dirty. Caked with soot. Depending on the numbers on the injector you may need a dealer to program a replacement injector? There are services that will clean them.

Ok

I will check that next

I just left on a trip so it will be 5 days before I can turn some wrenches again but I will get back on here as soon as I do

Google DFI Technologies (866) - 298-1510, Orange Beach, AL. Talk with Chet. He can lead you through the proper trouble shoot or return here. I am happy to help where I can. DFI repairs computers, injectors, etc.

I actually called them last week and left a message with no response
I'll try them again tomorrow :)
Ive heard great things about them!
Thanks!

I talked to DFI and what a pleasure it was to talk to them! Based on the history he said he does not think its the computer and since I have already checked the lift pump he believes it might be getting past the vst. I will check the vst tomorrow and report back with results.

Update

Went to continue working on the engine and now the bendix gear wont engage.

Anyone wirked on the bendix gear on this motor before?

Yes, not a big problem. Does it sound like its slipping or is starter just running? You will have to pull flywheel cover. The Bendix is a gear drive arrangment. It just pulls up out if the cavity. See if the clutch will spin (rubber mounted) in your hand or with wrench. Make sure it goes up & down the shaft for engagement. You can put a little grease, but don't overdo it. If the clutch slips you will need replacement. Ficht has different number of teeth than a carb model look alike! One less tooth. Dap of grease on top & bottom of mechanism for cavity & cover. Put cover back on.
