I have a 1999 Evinrude 150 hp on a Stratos boat.* I have probably ran an average of 2 gallons of oil through this engine since I purchased it in 2000.* Over the 10 years I've owned this rig I've had no problems with it whatsoever.* Now the issue,* last summer when I was in Canada the engine started to just quit all of sudden as I was running accrossed the lake.* I would squesse the gasoline bulb(which always seemed empty when this happened) and after some difficulty doing this it would start again.* Sometimes it seemed it would just run a short distance and then the next time it would run a long time.* Also, it started hard(which it never has done).* I returned to Wisconsin once during my stay up there and picked up a new bulb put it on in the hope of solving my problem.* It didn't seem to make a difference.* Luckily I made it through the fishing season for me up there.
*
When I returned home my daughter decided they wanted to go for a boat ride one day.* Not remembering my problem I said sure.* I got to the landing and had difficulty starting it, after I did get it going we let it warm up for a lengthy time hoping that would solve my issue.* Well we only got a short*distance from shore and it seemed that it started to hit on only about half the 6 cylinders and very soon after it did that it just quit not to start as it seemed there was no compression.* When I picked up the bulb from the dealer I told a mechcanic there how the engine was acting and he said he thought it may be the VRO pump.*
*
Does this sound like the problem?* If so can I(myself)replace that pump or does it have complications which I should take it to a dealer.* This boat/motor has always spent the winter in my heated garage and I just thought I have time to fix it now and get ready for next spring.* I was born and raised on a dairy farm where we did all our own mechcanic work on tractors, cars*etc. including overhauls.* I'm not new to this type of work.* I believe it to be not to comp[licated just need to diagnose the problem correctly.** Thanks
