1999 9.9 Johnson. Water on spark plugs. Will not idle down.

Changed head gasket. Better, but still getting wet. No idle. Starts bogging and goes out.

Anyone know of a weak point or most likely culprit on this model?

Thanks

Is the " poor idle " something that developed suddenly ?----------2 stroke or 4 stroke ??------------------Actually I think those 2 stroke models are a very nice running motors .----Bigger bore and different porting that the 74 to 92 models.------You might want to look into changing the exhaust cover gaskets.

It is 2 stroke. Motor is a used purchase. Claimed to be in running order. Not. Has been impossible to idle since purchased this past winter. I cannot attest to the conditions onset.

Carb is super clean as is entire motor. Starts easy when dry. Gets progressively harder to start during a "test session" (water barrel). Plugs are wet with water drops. High revs will keep it going, but not happily. Gas is fresh and clean.

Will have exhaust gaskets on hand shortly. Have not removed exhaust cover yet. Motor has never been apart or messed with.

Thank you for your help.

Buying a used motor can be risky unless you get a waranty / take it for a lake test.----You are located where ?

Outside of Peterborough, Ont. Where are you?

Took exhaust covers off today. There are clean sections on the inside surface of the deflector plate (inner exhaust cover). No carbon build up. Most of the deflector has carbon/soot. It is almost shiny clean on the lower half of deflector. (water?).

Gaskets looked perfect. No burns, tears, missing sections. Nothing. Like new. Argh! Was hoping for the AHA moment.

Tank is clean. Gas is fresh. Carb has been drained a few times. Drains out fresh good gas. Nothing wrong with tank or gas. There is quite alot of water on plugs. I am certain that there is a coolant leak to combustion here. I just have to find it.

Thanks.

Yes. Pull start. I was able to pump up comp reading to about 75 psi on both cylinders.

Thanks

Update. Head gasket new, exhaust cover gaskets new. Never saw any clear indication of gasket failure.

Motor conditions are: hard to start, WILL NOT idle. Will rev up but its a bit psycho. Revs drop off and can be brought back by teasing throttle. One unhappy motor.

Carb has been cleaned and cleaned and cleaned again. Fuel pump inspected. Gas good. Strong spark on tester. Compression 75 psi both.

I am missing something.

Plugs look oily and possibly wet with water. OILY for very sure. Switch plugs, same.

Model 1999, 9.9 J10REER

HELP......please.

Fuel is 50:1

Flywheel key... will check that now.

Bottom seal ....remove power head and check visually?

reed valves...... remove reed cover?

Thanks

Flywheel key fine. (dang it).

Pulled power head. Inside of exhaust leg looks like a cheese fondue exploded. There is a thick whitish creamy residue (sauce?) ALL OVER the inside of the exhaust leg. I don't believe I have ever seen this before. I am not going to taste it. What is going on? This is water and oil. Usually the inner exhaust leg is a dirty black tunnel of grime.

Please help, before I serve this to company.

UPDATE PART 2

Removed powerhead from lower. Removed reed assembly. Removed bypass cover. Removed flywheel and stator plate. Removed lower bearing cover. Removed exhaust pipe.

That is one shredded engine.

Found a grouping of cracks on top of block, above bypass cover. Thought it was peeling black paint. Not. Can insert knife blade into cracks.

Suspect that block is toast.

Anyone want to deliver the sermon?

Thanks.

We all get burned at least once...consider it a learning experience and move forward. Don't look back...something may be gaining on you.

UPDATE PART 2

Anyone want to deliver the sermon?

John was always a good hearted motor. Whenever anyone got into the boat he was always the first to offer to push. Although he came from a strong family, his only fault was he fell into the wrong crowd. He lived hard and fast and probably did not get enough oil in his diet or enough water pressure in his veins, and hence his life in this world ended far too quickly. Knowing John as we all know him, I am sure he would want to be an organ donor so that some other unfortunate motor could live on and perhaps benefit in some way, from his misfortune. That was just the type of motor, John was. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Amen.

That is beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes, even though I didn't know him to well. He will be missed. Thank you for the kind words. Amen, brother.

Sniff, sniff! What a beautiful eulogy. Even though I didn't know John I have two of his older cousins in my family and I dread the day that they must depart from us. We've all known and lost wonderful motors in our time but we can all be reassured knowing that they are cruising along on that big, blue lake in the sky. RIP.

I loved this and think I will hang a copy on the wall of my shop along with the other sign that says "outboard motors don't die, their owners kill them" (Poor John)

Just rejoined this forum because of a 1999.. 9.9 & a 1996 28 special.

Will change both impellors before first starts.........Time flies with no problems.
