1999, 9.9 carburettor fuel problem

To start my engine I have to connect an air line into the carburettor intake and pump it up to 80 lb pressure, when the pressure suddenly drops the engine starts and runs perfectly. I have had the carb off two or three times and checked it through but cannot find anything wrong with it. What is being released with the high pressure? The float looks ok and the pump seems OK as well.. can anyone set any light on this problem??

?????-------------This all sounds a bit extreme to me.------------------Are you saying you apply 80 psi into the fuel port for the carburetor ?

Explain better ????
Well it all started when we tried to start the engine once we put it on the boat the first time, it ran well in the test tank but it wouldn't start on the boat. My friend and I thought there might be a blockage in the carburettor so he disconnected the fuel line to the carb and put a 12 volt car compressor straight into the carb. the pressure built up to about 80lb then suddenly dropped to zero. We reattached the fuel line and it started right away on the switch. Once it was warm we could stop and start as normal. Once it had cooled down (the next day) it wouldn't start again. We then attached the compressor again and the same thing happened. As this was not normal we took the carburettor off and stripped it completely, checked all the valves, float and blew through all the channels. We even blew through the fuel inlet, turning the carb up and down to ensure the float valve was operating properly. We then attached it back on the engine, pumped up the ball valve from the tank and we could hear the fuel going into the carburettor. Tried to start it and the same thing happened. wouldn't start. We are totally baffled as to the cause? have had the carburettor off several times but cannot understand what the problem is. If we had another carburettor we would try that but as they seem to be like chickens teeth or very expensive we don't have that option. The fuel pump seems to operate OK and builds up pressure so we don't think it is that.. ???? Hope this helps..
