1999 70hp gear linkage

Hi guys I have a 1999 70hp 3cylinder motor and I'm trying to separate the leg to replace the water pump impeller but I'm getting conflicting stories about where the gear linkage separation is and how to go about the job my manual says its a split pin below the swivel casing but I cannot fin anything there others show a complex bracket held by a screw but I cannot see the part on the gear link shaft
So far I have also removed the air filter box but still cannot se anything do I have to remove more parts and if so what?
any help would be appreciated

Find the " shift lever " part # 88 on the list and remove the hitch pin.----You then push the shift lever to the port side to release the shift rod.----No bolts to take out very easy process !!
