"Barely makes a full rotation and stops turning over. Charged battery to no avail, then purchased a new battery to no avail. 1999 Bayliner Capri- not sure if it has electronic modules for starting. I was thinking starter solenoid or motor. Any suggestions on beginning the trouble shooting process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks"

Check the oil level. Way too

Check the oil level. Way too much oil; water in the pan? Oil OK? Pull the spark plugs and see if it cranks; look for water coming out of the cylinders. No water coming out and still not cranking? Clean all 4 ends of the cables. SOS? Pull the starter and have it serviced at a reman. shop.

"Ayuh,.. Pretty comprehensive

"Ayuh,.. Pretty comprehensive list Guy,...

All I can think of is, Make sure the drive is down..."

"If oil is good and all else fails, disconnect the battery and start cleaning connections, all of them.

Main plug pull it apart how does it look inside.

Don't forget the main ground follow the neg cable.

Pull the drive before buying a new starter. Try starting it with out the drive.

Then if you do pull the starter bring it over to auto zone they will test it for free."

"Thanks very much! A couple clarifications (forgive my ignorance)...
Guy, what do you mean by "SOS?"
Bondo, when you say "make sure the drive is down", do you mean trimmed all the way down?
Chiefalen, how would one "pull the drive"?
By "drive" I assume you are referring to the outdrive or lower unit... is there a simple disconnect at a drive shaft? And, how would this differ from simply putting it in neutral? ...Again, thank you all very much!"

"Here's an initial attempt

"Here's an initial attempt at clarification

SOS = same old stuff[alternatives abound] (ie no improvement).

trimmed down - maybe not 100% down but in the normal operating range (well below trailering level).

Pulling the drive is same as removing the drive - place in FWD, remove trim rams, remove nuts and washers and remove drive pulling it straight out.

Drive is synonimous with outdrive (upper & lower halves)."

"Thank you mark i really must

"Thank you mark i really must get clearer in my posts.

Every one of the prvious posts here was spot on you have to try one, turn it over try another.

Go down the list.

Good luck keep us updated."

"Starter motor (as you sai

"Starter motor (as you said) or battery cabling issue.
could be dodgy Batt isolating switch. usually bad crimps on Batt cable lugs.

Get a friend to help.
Remove spark plugs.
disable ignition. ( pull coil wire)

Connect a voltmeter from bat term +VE to main +ve on starter. crank engine whilst reading voltmeter. Should be zero volts. If greater than one volt, you are losing voltage across bad connections, between battery +ve and starter.

Repeat test from Bat -VE to engine block ground. Again voltage reading should be less than one volt."
