Hey fellows, it’s been a while but I need some help again.
I have a friend up the road that has an 1999 150 XR6 on his Bass boat; well he took it out last weekend and says it cranks right up, runs great from the start but when the motor gets warmed up or up to temperature it starts slowing down almost to an Idle with no power at all. I ask him was he sure it was getting water and cooling so he took it out again this weekend and it did the same thing and he said it was peeing good and he did not think it was running hot….. Any Ideas out there???

Re: 1999 150 xr6

Just because its peeing good dont mean a thing. All that proves is there is water leaving the top of the heads. Any one of the 2 thermostats might not be opening. When was the last time the impeller was done. If cooling is the problem, you can check the power heads are cooling properly by running them on the muffs with the cowling off and run til hot. You should be able to put your hands on the heads without burning your fingerprints off. Remember the pee tell tale only indicates some water is passing through the system. The poppet valve could also be stuffed.

Thanks, I guess I should have asked first.. What all could be causing his problem? He is thinking something electrical, coil, power pack or what ever, i haven't even looked at it and i'm surly not a outboard mechanic,, just pretty good tinkerer

Re: 1999 150 xr6

sometimes the stator can break down when hot causing this sort of problem. You can check it by using a hairdryer and checking resistance on certain leads of the stator but i dont know the proceedure. There are definately explanations in previous post so try a search.
