I am restoring a 13'6'' whaler i have owned for 16 years and was donated a 1998 tracker / mercury 40hp that needs a lower unit due to being smashed and the bearings and everything was shot. i heard the motor run and the guy kept running it until i removed it for him. I am having trouble find the correct lower unit for this motor. here is the serial. OE325881. 1998 40 ELPT. 5250 MAX RPM. i found a short shaft that looks like the correct model on ebay, how ever he says its from a 1990 engine.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCURY-MAR...ash=item542f01f5b9:g:pwgAAOSw9etXQMDg&vxp=mtr

but the gear ratio says its 1.83:1 and on my old lower unit the sticker says 2.00:1. will this other unit work? anyone know of any good shops that would have a used one for under $800? i have another 40hp force by mercury parts motor, same engine cover, but the lower unit is different and its only 2 years older. i just need help figuring out what and why mercury changed all these lowers and which one i really need. in my service manual these are the specs for my gear housing

ratio - 2.00:1
capacity - 14.9 oz
forward gear teeth count - 26 spiral
pinion gear teeth count - 13 spiral
pinion height - .025 inch

any help will be greatly appreciated. i rarely deal with mercury motors and I am just lost with what models are what.
