1998 Mercury 40 HP electric start potential selenoid issue

Hi all,
Let me start by saying I am not terribly mechanically inclined. I have a 98 Merc 40 HP tiller, electric start that clicks once now when I turn the key and won't turn over. From my reading online, I strongly suspect the selenoid. I'm just posting in case this is some common problem and there is a different solution. I recall once reading online that the dome light issue in my F150 could be solved by shooting wd40 into the door mechanism. that worked, so I appeal to the group in case I'm missing something with this Merc. Thanks much!!!

first check that the battery connections are right on the motor and the battery. If the solenoid clicks it means that the coil is energizing inside which is what you want. Then a couple simple checks with a voltmeter will find your problem in no time.
