1998 Mariner 30hp - no spark

hey guys
im looking into a 1998 30hp Mariner that has no spark..
i can get it cheap and have the tools and will to get it back and running!
in your opinion is it worth getting and testing and (hoping) its just the stator/CDI/coils or is this not worth it?
any idea on how much these parts cost to replace? i understand hundreds for the whole ignition system..
are Mariners reliable and efficient when running?
should i not have my sights on such an early model?
any advice is good advice!
thanks

Check the compression on each cylinder before buying...it's important that they are near eqaul in psi. Pull the oil drain drain screw at the leg bottom...look for metal chunks on the magnetic tip; finite specs of metal are normal. Water coming out is a sign of worn prop shaft seals.
