I recently purchased a used boat, noticed that tach was not working so I replaced it. After installing new tach it to did not work either, ohmed out wiring from engine going to tach and found no shorts. Put volt meter on battery, observed voltage and cranked engine, voltage did go up after engine was started. Increased the idle up and voltage went also, but was jumping around. Is this a sign that the voltage/rectifier could be bad and not letting tach respond. When key is turned on, power is being sent to tach, there are 4 indicators on the bottom of tach and needle moves from below "0" to "0"
