1998 Johnson 90hp driveshaft removal

Hi Guys,

I am trying to remove the driveshaft from the above motor. The gearcase and exhaust housing are split, I have removed the top bearing and retainer housing, which exposes the thrust bearing and plate, as well as the retaining screw on the outside of the gearcase. The driveshaft moves approximately 4 mm but no more. I have tried with the gearbox in neutral, forward and reverse, no difference. From the exploded views, I can see no reason why the shaft shouldn't just slip out. I want to overhaul the entire gearbox, there is about 3/4 turns of play in the gearbox.

Please help

John

Thanks racerone, I assume the propshaft and bearing retainer have to be removed, as there is no other way that the nut would be visible. Even then, it will not be very accessible. looking from top, once the thrush bearing and washer are removed, the surface underneath is almost the same diameter as the bore in the gearcase, so no way through there!

The nut is on the bottom and therefor you have to remove the propshaft bearing carrier / reverse gear to get a wrench on it.

Im working on a 1998 115hp johnson lower unit trying to remove the prop shaft i have removed bearing carrier now i can figure out what else is holding the prop shaft from coming ouy forward gear is removed what is next that needs to remove to remove the prop shaft
