1998 Johnson 6 hp choke removal

Freind's motor, no manual, it's a J4BRECj. When I run it in the can, it slowly starts to lose RPM, and if I hit the throttle, it bogs and dies. It does this whether I use the onboard Tank, or a remote. If I yank the choke, and then shove it back in right quick, the R's wind right back up. I'd like to look at the carb, but I can't get the choke knob off, so the cowl can't come off. Anybody got a clue? And why is it that even after running for 15 minutes, the fuel pump cover smells like varnish? Is it possible that This thing just wants me to run some kind of carb cleaner through it?

Sounds like you need carb work by taking the carb off and soaking it and installing a new carb kit. If your going to do your own work you should get an OEM Factory service manual for it. You could also try shop.evinrude.com and look at the parts diagrams of the carb.
