"I’ve got a 1998 Johnson Fasts
"I’ve got a 1998 Johnson Faststike 175 (J175GLECD) and have had it since it was new. Here is the scenario. The engine will start up and run fine at idle & in gear when cold. No problems. Always starts at the turn of the key. And the engine will run fine at WOT at all times. The idle problem starts after the engine has been run, and is hot and then shut off for awhile. I’ve always been in the habit of pumping the primer bulb before starting a hot engine because when it was new the dealer told me that the 175’s had a tendency to vaporize the fuel in the carb bowls after getting hot and sitting for a period of time. Then last year things started getting worse. The (hot) engine will start right up and idle out-of-gear fine, but as soon as I put it in gear to motor at a no wake speed, it will start stalling, sneezing through the exhaust, etc. It will always start right back up with no problems. It will continue to carry on until I can get it past about 1000 to 1100 rpm’s (slow idle in gear is about 700 rpm) and open it up. Once I run it again at WOT, I can go back to slow idle if need be and it will motor along just fine. I’ve changed the plugs, I’ve replaced the fuel line from the tank to the engine and used ss hose clamps along the way to try and eliminate a problem of sucking air into the fuel lines. My next step was going to be to rebuild the carbs (6) but after talking to the parts person at my dealership, she suggested I might want to try a little test with the fuel pump (VRO2 on this engine). She said when the engine was acting up, try squeezing the primer bulb to see if it would even out and run smoother, the theory being if the pump wasn’t doing its’ job then forcing gas into the carb bowls would compensate for it. She said that they had been seeing a lot of fuel pump problems related to the E10 gasoline in our area. Tried it and didn’t make a difference. So I’m kinda back to square one. I’m looking for suggestions before I take it into the shop for further diagnosis or start by rebuilding the carbs."
