1998 Force 120 has miss

" My friend has a Bay. Trophy. One day he went out and it was a little hard starting but ran OK until he tried to move. He noticed a slight surge at about 1200RPMs and a slight vibration.(like a miss) Full out he was missing about a 1/4 of his usual RPMs. We checked plugs,spark,water in fuel everything was fine. I wonder if the stator has anything to do with it. How do you check the stator? What do you think? "

It sounds like you are running on three cylinders.

You should check the compression first, and if that is okay I would then move to the trigger coil and the CD modules. If the stator was bad it would affect all of the cylinders, and you would have very little power.

Does the spark jump a gap of about 7/16 inch? Sometimes it looks like there is spark, but it will not jump a large gap.
