my 60 hp Evinrude does not turn over. The battery was three years old. So I replaced it with the new starting battery. When I initially installed the new battery. It started right up. Then after a week of not running the boat the same thing started again of the motor are not turning over. The battery terminals were extremely hotand it melted part of the terminal. Now the engine does not turn over. However, the battery shows a full charge. Is there a voltage regulator on this motor?is there anything I can do to check it like fuses? I would appreciate any help.it will be one month before a repair man can come out and service my motor.

Your engine does have a rectifier for the charging system, there is a fuse in the system.
Have you checked the system to see if there is a draw on the system, that could run your battery down over a period of time not running the engine.

Your battery cables could be corroded on the inside or else you have dirty connections on the battery or the motor.

heat means a voltage drop at that point....remove the battery terminal wire that is hot...clean the terminals as Boobie says...them try to flex the wires...they should bend as easy close to the lug as they do a foot or so away...you can take a knife and skin some insulation back right at the lug..look for gray or sometimes green in the wires.. if it is there or the wire is stiff then cut whatever is needed to get to good wire and out a new lug on it...to prove this is your problem place a meter across the battery..measure the battery output when trying to start the motor...then move the positive lead from the battery to the positive wire on the starter...try to turn the motor...the two readings should be the same..
a couple of tips...a fully charged good battery should read 12.7 volts with no load...note the 12.7...12 volts wont cut it...throw those wing nuts away and get regular nuts to replace them..
