Hi,

Hoping that someone might be able to help me. I had to replace my clutch dog (due to a prop strike) I have a new clutch dog and now I am trying to replace the prop shaft. I am stuck at the point where the clutch dog shifter and cradle are installed back in. I have tried a number of ways but just cant seem to get the jigsaw puzzle right. The shaft with clutch dog attached won't allow me to angle the shaft properly. Do I install the shifter and cradle first o do I install them together with the shaft?

Any ideas??

Steve

Shaft is usually installed after the clutch dog is in place,--------------Clutch dog must face the correct way.------Getting the balls. for the detent in place may require a special tool or some patience.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Finally worked it out. As mentioned the Clutch Dog, Shifter and Cradle need to be installed as one whole unit. The shaft is then inserted and orientated so that the hole in the shaft (where the detent balls and spring go into). One of the holes (bottom facing) in the shaft need to be covered by one of the dogs on the clutch this prevents the balls and spring from falling out. Carefully drop one detent ball bearing into the hole, then the spring and finally the second detent ball bearing. With a non-magnetic device (I used an old toothbrush) press down on the top ball bearing and then push the shaft inwards. You should hear the detent ball bearings click into their valleys. Takes a degree of patience, but easy enough to do.

The rest of the gear assembly can then be introduced and finished off.
