1998 evinrude 225 shift problem

I pull the lower off when I put it back on I can not get reverse I don't no what I am doing wrong but is there any way to check if the lower shift with the shift is unhooked from the lower. if the shift rod is facing forward it will not shift ay all can some one help

In neutral, the measurement of the shift rod from the top lower unit surface to the center of the shift rod hole is critical. Did you turn that shift rod and screw it down or up? If so, you'll need to drop the lower unit to correct it.

Another member will need to give you the exact measurement... I don't have that book.

I turned the rod a haft turn to face the rod forward but it would not shift turned the rod back shift into forwards but not reverse can I fix this problem with out dropping the lower

If the shift rod measurement adjustment I mentioned is out of adjustment... the lower unit must be dropped in order to correct the problem.
