"Hello folks,

I belong to the Mercruiser board but I am considering upgrading to a Aquasport 225 Osprey with a 1998 Evinrude 200 on it. I have a few questions concerning the engine and your opinions on this particular engine on that boat.

I haven't asked for a history of the engine yet because I am still thinking whether to pursue this or not. I will be taking it on a seatrial this Saturday but wanted to get some additional info on this engine.

Does anyone know how reliable this engine is? I live in Central Fl and it is a 20-25 mile run to get to the closest fishing grounds so I am concerned on this engine's reliablility. Also, how strong is this engine? THe boat is listed as 3900# with the Evinrude on it, add 100gallons of fuel plus 3-400#'s in gear plus 5-600# in people makes it about a 5500# boatr being pushed by the Evinrude 200, is it enough?

Just wanted to get an ided from you folks that may be familiar with this engine.

Thanks in advance,

Robert"

"Robert, can't speak to the reliability but I'm sure someone will jump in on that.

Did run all the numbers for the set-up you described. The 200 horse appears to be quite adequate.

Prop calculator suggests, properly propped, this set-up should be able to give you mid/high 30's as far as speed - which I believe is comparable to say a slightly heavier cruiser with a single 5.0/5.7 I/O...."

"Is the motor a Ficht DFI?

If so, there are a few things to check. OMC had some trouble with the Ficht motors early on, but stood behind their product and upgraded them. Most that are still out there are pretty reliable.

Here are some things to check.....

1. Look at the cylinder heads. If there is a 1/4" or so screw or pin right next to each spark plug, it has the revised cylinder heads with the deflectors.

2. Oil pump. I don't know how to tell the new style pump from the old one. Most of the time a spacer was installed on the rubber strap that holds each side of the air silencer on. The spacer was usually added during the oil pump recall. This was a very early recall, and was most likely performed if the motor had been in for service at all.

3. PCM (Computer)Early on, some of the computer boards experienced early failures from the circuit board being too thin. The symptoms were often difficult starting especially if it sat for a week or so. Ask if the computer has been replaced. If it has, you're good. If not, I'ts lasted 9 years and may last many more.

4. Fuel injector straps. There were a few cases where the injectors were lifing off the heads leading to powerhead explosions. BRP recalled all these and added the straps to take care of it. There is no reason it shouldn't have this upgrade.

5. Vapor seperator. I think this issue was confined to the 150-175 V6's but I'll mention it anyway. Some of the vapor seperators cracked leaking fuel. OMC recalled them and replaced it. I don't know how to tell.

Despite all these early issues, the Evinrude Ficht is an incredibly great performing motor. If all the upgrades and such have been performed, there is no reason why it can't be just as reliable as any other motor. My opinion is that once you experience one, you'll never go back to a sterndrive.

"Thanks for your input. dcramer, great checklist for me to go by. I'll be asking some pointed questions this saturday during the sea trial.

Thanks again!"
