Everything was just fine then next time I started it, I got a check engine light, and it would only run in safe mode. The shop said they don't have the correct data cable to do a diagnostic. They have a floppy disk, but no computer that accepts it. They've had the thing for a month. Is there any way to identify a code without the cable which they say is back ordered? Thanks for any help!

I hope this is not an Evinrude shop. If so it is just another nail in the service quality coffin for Evinrude.
Evinrude service is absolutely pitiful these days.

But, yes, read the codes off the tach. Turn key to on, Systems Check tach goes thru it's self check light show, and then begins to flash the Check Engine light showing stored codes.

It bothers me tho....you have a Check Engine light AND SLOW? No such combination exists.
The codes that throw the Check Engine light DO NOT trigger SLOW.

So, are you sure you are actually in SLOW mode?

The only faults that trigger SLOW are:
Cylinder overheat code 14. The TEMP light only will light up.
Manifold overheat code 15. Same as above.
Over rev sensor. No code. Goes into SLOW mode tho.
Oil pressure switch/ no oil. No Code, SLOW activated.

They are an Evinrude and Honda dealer and are noted for their marginal service. I checked a couple other shops, but they declined to work on it. I don't know that I'm in slow mode. I only assumed as much as it won't go over 3k rpm and runs rough between there and idle with a couple spots in between where it runs pretty consistently. My tach doesn't flash codes. It goes through the light sequence, then the check engine light just stays on...but no codes appear/flash.

I was able to find a Suzuki mechanic that had the correct data cable and he had me going in a couple hours. Cleaned the injectors and IAC valve system. $190 complete. The Evinrude dealer charged me $235, had my boat for a month and didn't fix anything.
