first time doing a water pump. took out the bolts and unit starts to slide off but then stops. how do i diconnect the shift rod? I see a cotter pin under the engine cover but not sure how that linkage works. Help with that and any other tips for the pump replace would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill

Large clevis pin going thru the engine's shift linlake. Remove that pin, push the linkage towards the other side of the engine to disconnect the linkage from the lower unit shift rod.

success on the removal! Now the impeller is fozen to the shaft. What is the prefered method to remove that??? Also the drive shaft has about an 1/8" play back and forth is this typical or is there a bushing or bearing in there that should be replaced. Thanks again

Try to move ( rotate ) impeller both ways, to see if it loosens up.---------It is likely a 2 piece drive shaft and what you see is normal.

As "Racerone" suggests, move the impeller in both directions to free it.

Use a good size punch and a hammer on the impeller as close to center (between the blades) as possible. Give it a good belt in both directions. If that doesn't do it, cut the rubber away, then split the impeller hub with a chisel.
