"Hello everyone,

I have a J70TLECB, and have problems starting.

The only way to get it started is to move the red lever/manual primer, I run it for a few seconds, then switch the lever back, and it runs fine.
After all that is done, I tested the choke, by pushing the key in, and that kills the motor.

Should I replace the primer solenoid? (part# 5007356)Is this easy to replace? I hate to waste the $150 on a guess.

Thanks in advance,
Chad"

welcome to marineengine!!

can you see it pump gas into the carb when you push in the key? ...you will have to take off the air silencer cover to see it

"There is a snow storm today,

"There is a snow storm today, so I will take off the air silencer cover and check for gas in the next day or 2, someone also asked me to post my starting procedure.
I have had this boat for about 6 years, and this procedure has always worked, until the middle of last year.
All I do is turn the key while pusing it in, and it has always started.
Once I had the problem last year, I tried a few times to pump the ball on the gas tank, but that usually floods the engine and then I would have to wait an hour before it would start.
So my new modified stating procedure for the last 9 months is:
1) turn key while pushing in, 95% of time it won't start
2) take motor cover off, turn red lever
3) turn key while pusing in, it always starts right up, I let it run for 10seconds, then turn it off.
4) Turn red lever back, put cover back on and start by turning and pushing in the key.
5) if the motor has been run in the last 4 hours, there is no need to turn the red dial, I just start by turning the key.

Thanks,
Chad"

"when u turn the lever,u r doi

"when u turn the lever,u r doing the exact same thing,as the solenoid does, when u push the key in,providing it is wking....and u say the eng slows, dies when u push in the key, soooo ,it is working.....squeeze primer bulb till firm, turn key on,push key in and HOLD WHILE CRANKING,when it startsmrelease key, push in and out till it runs on its on..."

"I tried the procedure you lis

"I tried the procedure you listed today jwbmarine.
Pumped the ball about 3 times until it was hard, turned and pushed the key 5 times, 30 seconds each cranking, it wouldnt start. Even while the key was turned I pushed it in and out and could see the voltage drop while pressing in.
So I took of the cover and turned the red lever, 1st crank it fired, ran for about 3 seconds and died, I then turned the red lever back and it fired right up and ran great all day.
I think that the primer solenoid must be shorted/bad? What do you think?

Thanks again."

"nope--------i dont think u r

"nope--------i dont think u r getting the jest,of what i am trying to assist u in doing........."

"squeeze bulb till firm.......

"squeeze bulb till firm........
raise warm-up lever
turn key on
push key in AND HOLD WHILE CRANKING
releae when engine fires,...now,during warmup, and to keep it from dying/restarting,.......push key in for 1 sec and release a few times till it runs on its own."

turned and pushed the key 5 ti

turned and pushed the key 5 times----that is your mistake!!!..PUSH IN & HOLD WHILE CRANKING.

"I'm sorry, I think I word

"I'm sorry, I think I worded my previous post wrong.
What I meant to say is, that after I pumped the ball till hard, and while the throttle is about 3/4 of the way I did the following:
Turned and pushed key at the same time for about 30 seconds, and repeated this last part for a total of 5 times. The 5th time, while the key was turned, I pushed the key in and out a few times to see if it would make a difference, the only thing it did was make the voltage go down when pushed. And yes, to get the throttle to 3/4 I do press the release button so its not in gear.
I have had this boat for 7 years, and started it over 100 times, something has definatey broke or worn out to cause this problem.

Thanks"

"ok....lets forget about the t

"ok....lets forget about the throttle...u should have what is called quickstart...
lets go back to basic ck of the primer system for u....
PULL THE SPARK PLUGS-PULL THE KILL CLIP, remove one primer hose off top carb, now, have a buddy watch that hose and direct it away fr engine to see if it squirts...u,push key in,and hold while cranking......"

"since u r seeing a slight vol

"since u r seeing a slight voltage drop, that is telling me ur solenoid is in fact,activating...and since it starts when u turn the red valve, that tells me u should have no nozzle restrictions or hose.the cranking test above should tell u its working.it is also ,sometimes easy to NOT be pushing in AND cranking...but,understood,u have owned it quite a while.....its a good and simple device..."

"Pump fuel bulb up hard. Remov

"Pump fuel bulb up hard. Remove one of the small primer lines AT THE CARB OR INTAKE. Key ON but engine not running. Observe small hose while pushing the key in. Bulb must be hard when doing this!

If fuel shoots out, the primer solenoid is functioning as it should. If no fuel, a restriction exists at some point or the primer solenoid is faulty.

You state that pumping the fuel primer bulb results in a flooded engine. If you can see fuel flow out of any of the carburetors when you pump that bulb, all of them need reworking.

In which case, I'd suggest that you have the carburetors removed, cleaned, and rebuilt.
