Hello everyone!
new member here. also new to boat motors. Just to let you know I am a field service mechanic for volvo construction equipment. I have been a mechanic for a long time. but these boat motors are a different breed. so, i could use some help. so here comes the story.....
i just picked up this boat from a friend of mine. got her all cleaned up and fixed a ton of things. took her out on the water the first time and she was running rough. I still ran the boat around the lake a few times. the more i ran it, the better it started running. i just figured old fuel in the carbs needed to get cleaned out. boat ran good that day.
next time i took it out, same type of issue. i found out that it was running on 2 cyl when i had no power. the other cylinder would kick in every so often.
i took her home and started troubleshooting. i found that the number 1 cylinder was not hitting as it should. i swapped coil packs from number 1 and 2. the issue stayed with the number one cylinder. that eliminates the coil pack being bad. so now i have either wire issues or something else.
I tested the ground at the 4 prong connector and it was good. traced the purple wire to the stator and it was good too. there was a black yellow wire that runs up to the console, it tested good to the main plug connector in engine compartment. the last wire i tested was white green and it goes into some kind of timing module that i have never seen.
so..... i guess what im asking is, how do i test that timing module?
how to test the output of the stator and what should it put out?
Any help would be great! thanks!!!
