My dad gave my son his 1998 Mercury 40ELPTO. So this morning I have a demoralized grand son because yesterday I had to tow him back to our dock because water was leaking inside the engine compartment and the engine stopped. The noise of the engine also seems to be unusal but I’m unable to pinpoint exactly what it is. It might be the exhaust (Really not sure). It is leaking from between the last bottom cylinder and what goes to the bottom end of the engine. I’m able to start the engine but water is coming out strong from the highlighted area. I’m thinking of a gasket but no clue which on so any help would be much appreciated !

Looks like the powerhead to tower gasket blew out. That would explain both the noise and water leak. Easy fix.

Thank you Jeff,

Doesn’t seem easy from here ;) Would you be able to share at a very high level Steps I need to take to get to it ? Do I need to lift the whole powerhead ?

It looks like the powerhead was not bolted down properly.----There is way too much space between the powerhead and exhaust housing.----Ask about what was done on this motor !!----Powerhead replaced ?----Wrong powerhead ?----This clearly explains water leak and noise.----Ask awesome grandpa some questions.

My dad didn’t use it much. Probably once or twice per year. He bought it used then not long after but a brand new pontoon. Finding the history of this outboard is most probably close to an Indiana Jones Quest ;)

I have explained what appears to be wrong.-------I would do a compression test before spending a single coin on this motor !
