1998 25HP 2 stroke-- water leak

I have a 1998 Mariner 25hp 2 stroke that I picked up from a guy that let it sit for 10 years. Did a water pump kit and re-installed. Now when I run it, the lower is filling up with water and its leaking out the top where the shift linkage comes out. Water is getting up to the motor and out the pee hole but the water leak is very concerning. I've checked and checked and triple checked the water pump assembly and it seems fine. Wondering what to check next before I give in and take it to a shop.

Are you sure there is a problem ?-----Water that cools the motor returns to the lake and leaks out everywhere.----Find some videos showing your motor running on a hose.

I don't think its normal, I've seen 5-10 videos of the same motor running and at no point are they leaking like mine is.

When you replaced the pump did the copper tube come out with it? If it did, it has to be reinstalled in the motor before you put the lower back on. Then you have to make sure it lines up with the pump housing when installing the lower unit. Did you also make sure the washer stayed on the shift linkage?
