1998 120 hp Force by Mercury Dies when shifted into gear.

This motor runs fine except it konks out when shifting into gear. Anybody out there know why?

The motor is not producing enough power to keep running.----Start with a compression test.----Then check for strong spark on the 4 leads.----Is this something that developed suddenly ?

Compression 120 on all cylinders. Has spark, but I don't have a spark tester. engine has been sitting for a year. Carbs also just rebuilt. Used separate fuel tank with new fuel. Timing ? I don't know.

What's the rpm's before you put it in gear?
Timing: if you didn't touch it?? then it shouldn't be a problem.

Haven't touched the Timing. The rpm's are idle speed. Don't have a tach.

In N they should be 1100-1200
In gear they should be about 800.
Maybe find a timing light with a built in tach or get a Tiny Tach.
It hooks to a plug wire and tells you the rpm's.

Tried increasing the idle speed. Same result. It still dies when I put it in gear.

Is it running on all cylinders, yes or no ?----With motor idling pull one plug wire off at a time to test.

All cylinders have fire and 120 psi compression.
