Hello guys, I have a 25hp Mercury Tiller I've owned since new. The last few years I've noticed when I try to crank it, pull rope, after its been running and warmed up, it tries to almost hydraulicate or almost fires and kicks back. When it does this, it rips the pull cord from my hand, hurts like a mofo too!!!! Now when I run the engine a while, shut it down and go to restart it, I pull the rope out sometimes 5 or 6 times kinda slow. Sometimes it acts like it tries to do this when I'm even pulling it slow. But it also seems as if I'm clearing the cylinders and can rip the rope once or twice and she fires up. Don't ask me why I don't have electric start, when I purchased it new in 1997, I was 20 years old and didnt know they offered an engine that size as a manual start only model. Please help

I've seen that happen with a Merc 200 (20 hp--different motor but same coils). After a few skinned knuckles, blisters and frustration I stumbled onto the problem: bad ignition coils. Changed them out and the problem went away.

Not sure WHY they were at fault, but that was the ONLY change that cured the problem.

I hadn't even thought about it being a coil issue. I figured it was a fuel/flooding issue or head gasket leaking water into the cylinder(s). But yeah, it hurts like a bish when you rip on the rope and it rips it from your grip.
