1997 Mercury 150 EFI odd issues

I'll try to be as detailed as possible. Thanks in advance. Saturday evening I pulled the boat out to get it ready for the lake Sunday morning. As usual I hooked it up the hose and ran it for a bit. Fired right up and idled fine as usual. Got to the lake the next morning and it fired up then I took off down the lake. Fished a spot a bit. Cranked up and moved then fished another area. Weather called for T-Storms around noon so were getting close to that time and wanted to crank up and move close to the launch just in case it got bad. Motor would run for a second and die, sometimes would just turn and turn and not fire over and if it wouldn't idle long before dying or as soon as I put it in gear. SO I started trolling back while stopping every 20 min or so trying to crank it and same issue. Finally the clouds turned black and started to drizzle so I decided to try it again for one last miracle. After about 3 tries it fired up and idled, put it in gear and started moving. I was in a small boat lane that was heading out to the main lake lane so I took off and got on plane then I hit stump right in the middle of the lane and it killed the engine. Fired right back up and I coasted to the main lane and hauled butt. I got back to the launch and killed it just to see if it would start again. Fired right up 2 or 4 different times. Back the trailor in the lake and went to start the boat to load it up and it was acting finicky again by after a few seconds. Finally got it going and headed home.

When I got home I hooked it up to the ears again and could not get it to turn over at all. Wouldn't even spit or sputter. I hooked up my spark tester but the sun was too bright to be able to tell if it was sparking or not. So I called it a day and back it into the boat shed.

After work the next night I went out and it fired up on first key turn like it just rolled out of the manufacturer. I let it idle on the hose a bit and went inside to get my manual and by the time I got back it had died. Then would not start again. Tried for several minutes. It was kind of spit and sputter occasionally but mostly nothing. Started flipping through the manual and took the cowling off to hook up the spark tester and it fired right up again. Of course showing I had spark. Ran like new again.

I have a tourney this weekend and I'm afraid to trust it or get too far away and miss the weigh in or have to rely on trolling all day and risk draining my trolling batteries.

Four years ago the fuel pump was replaced. Two years ago the trigger was replace. When the trigger was replaced was about the time I noticed a waxy build up on the engine from what I believe from the trigger or stator overheating. I always use fuel treatment for ethanol and always run the engine preiodically during "down time" in the winter. This is my 5th trip out in the last 2 1/2 months and have had no issues before this weekend. Any idea what could cause intermittent issues like this? And if so what can I check for while its running and not running to help diagnose this? Thanks
