1997 Merc 115 slipping

"Hello. First time posting on this forum, but this site was recommended by a friend so here goes it. Just recently purchased a 1997 Astro 1700 and finally got her out on the water tonight. I believe the prop is a Merc Laser II, but I'm not sure the pitch at the moment. After we left the marina, I gave it throttle and once she got up on plane, the rpm's seemed to climb, however, the prop didn't seem to want to push the boat faster. After a couple seconds of lag, the prop caught up to speed and the boat took off. Thought maybe it was just because she hadn't been run in awhile, but it was pretty consistent through the 1.5 hours out. I've been doing some research, but can't seem to find any answers. Like I said, she runs fine and strong after the lag is over, just can't seem to get over that lag. Spun hub? Ideas? Thanks."

"Josh, could be a spun hub. Easiest way to check is put a mark on the hub and an ajacent mark on the prop - take it for a run and see if they come back "out of line".

If so a prop shop can replace the hub for you (not something you do in the garage or basement).

However, a spun hub tends to keep spinning at higher rpms. It is possible that your prop may be cavitating just as you get on plane.

You could try trimming it down just a bit and see if this makes a difference..."

Thanks Graham. I am going to be taking her out again tonight and will try to the mark on the hub and prop. I also have a spare Merc Laser II prop that I might throw on this weekend to see if that makes a difference. I'll let you know how it goes!
