I joined this to help my buddy out. We are diagnosing a issue on his boat currently. The problem is once the motor is hot, the motor only cranks and doesn't start. Let it cool down and it starts up just fine. I've done some preliminary troubleshooting and it seems to be pointing to the stator, which is what a local marine dealer thought was possible too.
I was trying to use this document http://www.outboardignition.com/page39.asp to look at the resistance of the stator and trigger assembly to see if that pointed to anything. The problem is what that shows doesn't line up with the colors coming from the stator.
The colors that the motor has are exaclty to that of the "40-45 Flex Flywheel 4CYL" in the chart, but that 89-96 and the serial range stops before this motor. If those are correct, the stator isn't even close, the trigger assembly is a few ohms low and each ignition coil is within the sweet spot.
Here are the details from the mfg stamp on the motor.
40HP Mariner Magnum
S/N 0G495317
"1997 C40ELPTO"
Electric start, built in tank
2 stroke, 4 cylinder, all cylinders operating correctly
I'm looking for two things. The first being the flywheel puller to get access to the stator. I would hate to buy this as a one time thing, but it's gonna be needed if we want to replace the stator. That said, will this work? I don't know the thread pitch of the flywheel, but size wise looks close to ~1". Also, any other way other than pneumatic impact gun to get the nut off that flywheel? I assume my Makita cordless impact isn't going to cut the mustard and the darn thing won't work with a breaker bar because it'll spin...

Second and last, I'm trying to find a replacement stator that necessarily is an OEM one to save cost. I'm completely confused on what I need to get and want to order it soon without taking the old one off first. Here is what I have found in my search so far, but very few part numbers match...
