"Thought starter was bad, removed and bench tested, works fine, draws correct amps, etc... Before replacing it would not turn engine over, battery fine, etc... Now after removal I reach into the hole that the starter drive gear (13 teeth) goes into and notice I can freely spin the gear the starter gear would mesh with. I can spin this gear either way, now I know somethings not correct, replaced the starter and it spins and free wheels the gear it meshes with, no engine turnover. Any ideas before I remove the flywheel cover and start inspecting?
I'm referring to the gear that sits inside the flywheel housing, not the drive gear attached to the starter shaft. I put my finger through the hole into the flywheel housing where the starter shaft would go and I can spin the gear with my finger, this shouldn't happen unless I'm missing something... I'm wandering if something is broken inside the housing and what it could be? All the teeth on the gear I can feel with my finger are intact and do not appear worn at all.
Update on the starter. The starter shaft isn't the type that has the drive gear spinning up and back to engage the flywheel gear but rather it's fixed in place with only a tiny bit of movement on the shaft. I disassembled the starter on the bench last night, brushes looked good, springs not worn, armature and magnets new and not a bit of corrosion anywhere. Re assembled and works fine on bench. Somebody must know something about the free spinning gear issue inside the flywheel housing, it looks like two gears take the gear from the starter and transfer it somehow to the flywheel so something must be broken inside this housing. What mechanism, clutch or otherwise, moves these gears off the flywheel once the stator charges the power pack enougn to provide ignition. I do have a repair manual ordered but as you can guess it's not hear yet and I'm very frustrated with this one."
