"I'm about to buy my first bass boat, and i have heard from some people to stay away from johnson and evinrude in the later years but the early ones are bulletproof. I was just wondering what yalls input on this motor is. I have not been able to contact the owner yet to ask about RPM's at top speed and a few other questions.

Any tips for buyin and things to look for?"

"My freind has the same vintage of engine, 225, on a 17.5 triton, I have only known him for about 6yrs, I have not witnessed any flaw nor has he made any comments re poor operation, I do know that he does fish competively and I am pretty shure he has the financial ability to replace this engine should he feel the need. I run a 125 with commercail lower end, 1991 and I have had a few problems but after 8 yrs of running have only spent about $1000.00 bucks of required repairs which I dont feel is real bad, but I guess it depends on usage in terms of hrs operated.
As far as any tips, well a good quality mix oil such as omc or merc is a priority, and if you intend to run wot and your buget can withstand it plugs and wires at least every 2 summers, also, a treatment of carb clean once or twice a year depending on hrs run, there is a couple of guys on this site who can give you a better idea on that topic as this will be my first stab at it.
