I'm new here and looking for some help.

I bought a 1997 Yamaha C40 MSHV that needs a lower unit. "last owner ran it full speed into a submerged rock and blew up the unit ". He let the moter sit , power head still ran 3 years ago and I bought it cheap off him. *I am trying to find a used lower unit and can't seem to find documentation on the web of what other years and models are compatible. I also can't figure out if the C series is compatible with non C series lower units. Any assistance you could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks

If it is a 3 cyl powerhead and the serial number prefix is 63d you can fit a 95 through many years later 40-50 short shaft lower units. I may have one.

The replacement Part Number is 6E9-45300-02-4D from Yamaha website. For the C model C40MSHV that I have.

The part number for 40MSHV non C model is 63D-45300-00-4D*

I am under the assumption these are not compatible. The non C model is much easier to find used.

You are correct. I am mistaken. 2 cyl motor. You may be able to find a long shaft unit and install your driveshaft if it isn't ruined.

Am I correct that they are not compatible? C40 and just 40? I know they are different part numbers but I wasnt sure if that meant for sure they are not compitiable.

As for as I know the drive shaft is ok. I havnt been able to find a c40 long shaft either. Not sure I want to tackle that. I think you have to take apart the whole lower unit to replace drive shaft. Maby I'm wrong. I'm guessing not that many c models were sold.

2 cyl and 3 cyl will not interchange. You are correct that there aren't that many out there. if you are in the US I can sell you that for 1,590. plus postage. Yes it involves a complete disassembly to change the driveshaft.
