1997 75 hp Force crank no start

I just bought a pontoon from a gentleman that was a mechanic, as am I, but I dont work on marine engines, let alone outboard motors. The previous owner did a lot of work to the motor and im not sure to what extent his work went. He told me it would run but misfire after getting hot. When I got it home, it wouldn't run at all and had no spark. Replaced the trigger assembly and now has spark. It still will not start. I'm getting fuel to the carb but im not 100 percent sure it's getting to the cylinders. I'm going to test the compression once I find my tester, but I believe the compression is fine. Any other advice is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
 
These 3cylinder, one carb were one of the worst motors made by Mercury/ Force.
Compression, spark, then fuel?????
Possible the floats stuck and not letting fuel in???
Try a shot of starting fluid and see if that makes it fire???

Misfire after getting hot "RED FLAG#1" might be a bad impeller or fuel pump gone bad???

Post comp results and if the starting fluid made a difference??
If you've been trying to start and the cylinders foul out after a while, it makes it really hard to start(change the plugs)

I just read one of your older post,
Check for TDC?
Pull top plug, rotate engine insert screwdriver in the hole.
Slowly turn the motor until the screwdriver gets pushed all the way out.
Then front of the motor, above the top carb should be a timing mark.
It should match the flywheel marks.
No match? then the flywheel key's sheared?

I have a 1997 Force 120 hp, and I did the above check on the top plug and with the screwdriver all the out the timing mark was right on 0 (zero) does that mean the timing is ok? I'm new to this forum so please excuse me if I'm not doing this right.
 
I have done a lot of tests and turns out im only getting a weak spark. I believe the coil packs are bad. I tested the secondary coil and am getting readings way off what the repair manual says. One of them is totally open. I'm going to replace them and see what happens. Hopefully this fixes it...
 
I replaced the coils and it did nothing. Even the new ones are reading out of spec so it must just be the new style coil. The manual says it's supposed to get .5v from the trigger and it's only getting .34v. Is that enough to make the coils work?
 
...the stator was in the wrong position... apparently the stator has to be set to a specific rotation and it was off by a couple holes. Engine is running fine

Like I had said earlier, these 3cyl, 1 carb weren't the best engineered out there.
One problem was the top cylinder lacked lubrication and would score.
One thing you might add a couple ounces of oil more to the fuel.
 
I’d definitely start with that compression test to rule out the basics, then check if the carbs are actually delivering fuel into the cylinders. A quick spray of premix in the intake can help narrow it down fast.
