1997 50 hp Merc Alarm Noise

I have a 97 Merc 50 HP outboard that the alarm/speaker randomly goes on and starts to crackle like a modem or fax machine is connecting. The motor is pumping water and the oil is full. The engine is running fine but the noise is getting annoying.

We can get it to stop at times by beeping the horn (which sometimes sounds normal and sometimes sounds real weak) or moving the throttle back. Other times we can't it to stop at all. I'm pretty sure it's a short somewhere but looking for help or troubleshooting steps to take. It sorta sounds like a blown speaker.

Any suggestions or ideas? Ever heard of this?

Thanks,
Greg

Re: 97 Merc Alarm Noise

Greg, don't want you to feel ignored here but your question is a difficult one to try and advise on.

You obviously have a short somewhere.

Could be anywhere - under the engine hood (harness), the wiring up to the control, the control itself etc.

Is there a "common" issue that stands out that would cause this - NO.

Get hold of an ohm meter and start checking between wiring connections while giving the harness (or whatever) a shake.

Can't point you in any better direction than that..

Galamb, thanks for your response. I'll try the ohm meter and do some testing. I thought it just might be a common issue so that's why I posted.

Thanks for the help....Greg
