"This is a tracker, force by mecury 40hp OE274840. It misses intermittently when planing out and at high speed. I found a red wire arcing to the engine. This wire goes to the voltage regulator.I repaired the wire but the regulator has a crack in the epoxy back and appears to be swolen around the crack. Would the regulator cause rough running or should I be concerned about more damage to other parts?"

"Renee, in itself the voltage

"Renee, in itself the voltage regulator should not cause the miss. But it could be a symptom of a damaged stator (which could be damaged as a result of the cracked regulator or vice versa) which is ultimately causing the ignition problem.

This being a Force, if you don't have at least a repair manual, I would get ahold of one, and go through the ignition troubleshooting section in particular.

Ensure that the stator is up to spec and consider replacing the voltage regulator (if it doesn't check out).

The regulator runs about 150 bucks (ouch), but if it takes out the stator as well, you can tack a couple more hundred onto that..."

"I checked the resistance of t

"I checked the resistance of the stator ( between the grn/wht and wht/grn) and I read an open circuit. I understand this should be 700 to 800 ohms?( red stator)I was confused that the motor would run like this, but I'm guessing the voltage can arc across the open windings in the stator."

"Renee, yes, should be looking

"Renee, yes, should be looking for about 700 ohms resistance (give or take a bit to allow for temperature) with the wires disconnected (checking bare ends).

I also read another note that stated an occassional miss could also be caused by the spark-plug. If this occurs to try swapping out with inductive sparkplugs if using non-inductive."

"Hello, I replace the stator,

"Hello, I replace the stator, regulator and the plugs. I tested on the lake and there is a definite differance. I've got more power and rpms, but there is still the issue of missing or sputtering when planing and a slight miss or surge at wot.It starts, idles and idles on the shift perfectly. So far all I've noticed is when I throttle up, there appears to be an excesive amount of fuel coming from the main nozzle. The float is level with the bowl gasket when the needle is seated. The needle and seat are in great condition. The carb appears to be in great condition. The main jet is tight and I see no cracks that would allow extra fuel into the nozzle. I used 6.5 gallons in about 8 miles. Can you point me in the right direction? (info) Tillostin w/ .062 main. Thanks"

"Problem solved. I went throug

"Problem solved. I went through all the adjustments and the throttle cam was out of adjustment. Appearantly the amount of fuel I saw was normal, but timing and fuel were not in sync. It runs great now and fuel economy has improved by leaps and bounds. Thanks for your help."
