1997 200 Oceanrunner Need Input Diagnosing!!

Hello to all,
PLEASE HELP:confused:
I bought a 97 ocean runner 200 that had been sitting up for a while. The boat will run like a champ in the driveway but acts up in the water. Here is what has been done so far.
- checked fuel lines - cleaned carbs twice - replaced seals on carbs - checked pulse limiter - hooked up external tank- replaced inline filter to engine - cleaned out vro tank added fresh oil- link and sink- adjusted idle speed on carbs while on water - new NGK plugs.

Here are the symptoms. The first time out after reinstalling the carbs the boat idled and got on plane and ran wide open. This engine is a beast---> but When I put in neutral the engine shut down and it would shut off every time i tried to put it in gear. It fires every time I can throttle up with out engine being in gear and it will scream. When i shift into gear it bogs down and dies. Every now and then if i high rev and throw it in gear it will take off an run again.

Things I have Tried
When pumping ball while engine running it will not keep it running (doesn't help) If i hit key primer as it is bogging down it will come back to life at times. When I flip the primer (red switch) on motor when bogging down it will continue to run and not cut out. If motor is running and I cover each carb with hand while running it will pick up power.

Its like it is starving itself and i can not figure out why!!!!!!!!!!!:confused::confused:

Now I'm thinking the fuel pump side may not be holding pressure. I don't want to throw parts at it until I hear others thoughts and have checked other possible causes.

Thanks for reading my book but I am trying hard to get this figured out.

Sounds like a definite lack of fuel problem. Agree with the above.

Im going to recheck them.. When motor was running and I was sqeezing the ball it did not help. If i used one of the primers (key or red switch) it would pick back up.. Still throttle bodies? I thought sqeezing ball would have forced gas through but I am not sure. Any other suggestions before I break her down again..

Thanks I will be checking the throttle bodies first

On the stbd side, top throttle body, that would be #2, there is a plate held on with 4 Phillips head screws. Remove that plate.
Under there is the calibration pocket.
There are tiny holes that go thru to the venturi right at the butterfly.
Those holes must be open and clean.

You have to do it for all six cyls, and that means taking the throttle bodies off, because you cannot get to the port side plates.
If throttle bodies come off, you have to do a complete link and sync.

So examine #2 first, you don't have to do all that disassembly to see if they are clogged. But I bet they are.

Examine VERY carefully. There are more holes in there than immediately visible.

I have had many engines that exhibit the exact symptoms you describe. If those holes are even slightly closed, the engine cannot get idle fuel.

Pumping the bulb will have absolutely no affect on this problem.

On an aside, for those reading this, this separate throttle body cleaning is sorta new as Evinrude came out with the plastic carbs. Old style all metal carbs have the tiny holes too, but the mechanic pulls the carb, cleans all the holes, and is usually successful in getting all crud out.

But, Evinrude went to the plastic carbs. They cannot hold the tight tolerances in the plastic material to make such small holes, so they moved the idle calibration pockets and holes to the metal throttle body. Most backyard guys don't even consider the throttle body part of the carb...they just hit the plastic carb and skip the throttle body. But that idle fuel metering function is still there, just moved to an all metal part.
Gotta do it. If this is the source of your problem, you will be shocked at how smooth it idles with those passages clean.

This lesson was drilled into me when I had one that had salt crystals down in there. I was running with the air silencer off, fine tuning, and it picked up spray/mist and salt crystallized in there.

One other thing to check is the small idle tube that is in the carb which picks up fuel from the bowl. Run a very small wire through it to make sure it's clean. Packing wire works good.
