1997 15hp mercury

Good afternoon, I have a mercury 15 hp outboard s/n OG 523839 when I tilt the motor to up/horizontal position it will not go back to the down/vertical running position anymore without me pushing the hook reverse lock and crushing my fingers. I believe the motor is in need of spring number 42127, hoping someone can confirm my thoughts? Thank you!

Look to see if it has the tilt lock. Small knob on the side of the transom bracket, If it is engaged it will lock the motor in the tilt position.

One of those little b#st#rds did the same to me! Be careful and figure it out.

My 2000 15hp merc has a little clamp mechanism that locks to the shift rod, just under the lock lever thing I think you are talking about. I will post a pic of it later for you. without this thing on there, you have to manually reached down and lift the v looking lock lever
