"Hello. I found this site when I ran a search to figure out what my options are. 2 weeks ago, my engine started to make a loud noise. It sounded like something that is stuck in a metal fan; very loud and rapid tapping. The next time out, the loud tapping was gone but the engine (and boat) shook considerably. It ran rough at idle and low rpm but fairly smooth at high idle. Then, I heard a loud thump, the engine idled down and stalled. It started right back up but the shaking continued at lower rpm and lesser at high rpm. This has happened 2 more times. Seems to run smooth at around 2500 to 3200 rpm. Oil pressure and level are fine. Temperature is fine too. There is no noticeable drop in speed or performance.

I called my mechanic. He determined that 2 of the 8 pistons (3 and 5) are not firing. Compression test showed both to be very low (10 and 40). The spark plugs for these pistons were dry; no gasoline, oil or water. One was flattened, however, as if it had been impacted very hard (the gap was completely closed).

The mechanic said I need a new block at a cost of around $6000 or I could get away with send ing my block to a machine shop to be reworked for about half the cost.

What is your diagnosis and what are my options?

I would greatly appreciate your opinions.

Incidently, the engine is in a 1996 24ft. Pursuit Denali and has 1025 hours on it."

"If you have a compression reading of 10 and 40, that's not good!
BUT!!!!! There is end in sight. Sound like you may have "dropped" two valves.
Both 3 and 5 are on the same side. I would suggest pulling the head off the left bank and looking at, first, the pistons, then, I would have repair done to the valves and the head.(If the pistons look ok)
Sounds like something gave out in that head.
Now, that brings us to WHY? Why did that happen?
Did the engine get hot? Bad valve spring? Keepers?
You should find out if you take it to a good reputable shop. Or, if you have knowledge about engines, you can do it yourself.
Something got into one of those cylinders to smash the plug.
Let us know!!!!"

"Thanks Eric. I will have the head pulled and will let you know the details. The engine did not get hot. From the noise that it made, I suspect that it was a valve spring that gave and the loose valve crushed the plug."
