"I have a 1996 Seaswirl 23' Cuddy with the OMC 5.7L and SX 70 Cobra outdrive. The boat has only 250 hours.

Everything works and runs great! Execpt the Tach. Last season it started behaving badly. On startup it looks like it is reporting correctly. When I am running it has a mind of its own. It floats up to 7K then back down. This year it pretty much stays up around 7K, unless we are at idle. I know the engine speed/MPH so it really isn't a problem running, but I'd like to fix the problem. Is it likely the tach itself? How does it connect to the engine?

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Brian"

"Mine was doing the same type

"Mine was doing the same type of thing, I was advised to check the wires on the - post of the coil. I also checked all grounds on all gauges and accessories and found some not so tight. I've tighted everything up and it seems to be working better but I haven't had it back in the water yet to give it a good test. At least that's a place for you to start."

"Another thing you can check i

"Another thing you can check in addition to what Glenn has suggested is check the back of the tach, some have a small dial or rotary switch that allows you to select different # of cylinders like 4, 6 and 8. Make note of where the switch is and then turn it back and forth a few times, this will help clean the contacts inside."
