Hello and thank you for your help in advance.

I recently purchased a boat with a 1996 Mercury Force 50 HP outboard. I have a question about the til/trim. If I sound like I dont know what I'm talking about its because I dont. Here is my problem.

Trim/tilt has switch located on throttle. Nowhere else.
Initially, trim/tilt up and down worked fine.
After taking tilting the motor up I tried to bring it down using the switch only for it not to move at all.
When I activate the switch I hear a clicking sound coming from the relay area. Hydraulic makes no noise.
After tampering with relay and wires for about 30 minutes, motor went down using switch.
Disconnected relay, checked the connections and they appear fine.
Plugged down relay into up relay and it would still not work.
Plugged back into respective relays and the tilt/trim worked flawlessly for about 3 minutes before it stopped going down again. Would still go up every time.
The problem is totally intermittent. One second it works and the next it wont.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

Respectfully,

Brian

That sounds like the solenoids might be bad.
Test light and have someone on the shifter.
The blue wire is UP the green is DOWN.
Test light across both terminals when pressing the switch either up or down.

You have a pressure release screw on the unit if it needs to come down for running.

thabk you for your reply. Would the solenoid be bad if it's trimming the motor up or is there a separate one for up and down? Any chance it can be the switch?
