1996 Mercury 50HP 2-Stroke

My 50HP outboard will not go over 2900 RPM's nor will the power trim work either in the water. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did this happen all of a sudden ??----Some simple checks to do.--------Do a compression test first.----Then check for strong spark on each plug lead.-Will spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more , yes or no ?

Bought a $300.00 rebuild kit. Replaced everything in kit.
