1996 Mercury 125hp "barks"

Warm-up at house - starts 1st crank - while warming up the idle runs about 1800rpm - after 4-minutes warming up, it will "bark" and idle goes down to 1200rmp - then back up to 1800rpm, thereafter every 30 to 45 seconds it will "bark" again. Solid stream of water out the p-hole. When in the water, the idle problem is not so noticeable. The engine runs just fine under power. However, after running at 25mph for 45-minutes to the fishing hole and shutting it off - if you try to start it within 30-minutes - it is hard to start. Plugs are new, in-line fuel filter on the engine is new, water separator filter is new. Any assistance to help resolve the "bark" and hard "hot start" will be appreciated. Dutch1

Check the fuel pump diaphragm for leaks. I recommend doing it every 5 years.
Click here for the service manual:
You do need it on this engine.

Check the linkage sync. All the throttles should be shut at idle.

The 2+4 will "bark" at idle if any "unmetered" fuel or air leaks in.

If this does not solve the problem than suspect the CDM ign. That is going to be tough to pinpoint.

Timebandit - thanks for the information - I will take your advice and check out the fuel pump and linkage sync this next week. Let you know the results thereafter. Dutch1
