"putting new lower unit on 199

"putting new lower unit on 1996 115 merc
cant seem to find right so-called detent in
neutral had unit on bench set in neutral
when installed in forward, cant seem to find right spot, any help"

to prop and im in reverse, counterclockwise
and turn shift pin i can feel it go into neutral, however if i turn prop counter again
it goes right back to reverse, there must be a fine line in this shift process, ive tried
putting it in neutral not touching prop
but when bolted up its in reverse
this is like the twilight zone!!!!!!!

"you are not finding nuetral.

"you are not finding nuetral. it has a detent. you are probably on the backside of the shift cam. shifter can rotate beyond fwd, and reverse. try turning the driveshaft to see what gear you are in. (probably fwd.) if you remove the pump, it will turn more easily. once you find the nuetral detent, it will stay there."

okay, im turning driveshaft, prop is turning in forward, as i keep turning i am also turning
shift pin. shaft is turning then prop stops,
this should be neutral right??? but when bolted up goes in forward. there has been a time
were prop stops turning, yet if i turn driveshaft right prop turns right, if i turn
driveshaft to left prop turns counterclockwise
is this neutral"

"sorry, I've been telling you wrong.detent on that model is a pin in the clutch dog. it should not have a problem staying in nuetral. please post serial number, (to verify) and history. where did this new lower come from, etc?"

serial is OG422767 1996 MERC 115
cant seem to find serial on lower unit
but they are identical its design 1
three jaw reverse clutch. maybe im just gettin old, if you can go through the steps
ill follow, which way to turn shift rod while turning shaft etc. i have done many omc
where you disconnect shift rod under power head, but this takes the cake"
