"Hi Guys! I hit an unknown object while on plane. Lost f/r and trolled home.Engine runs great. Found LU 2b in f/gear, discovered identicle stress fractures on both sides of mid body from lower bolts to lower part of cowl. What kind of damage should I expect? Could the shift shaft have decoupled during the strike? Am I looking at total disassembling to rpr mid body?"

"Randy, definately have to remove the lower unit and see what, if anything you hurt (drive/shift shaft and water-tube). And yes, you may have simply uncoupled the shift shaft.

If you simply cracked the exhaust housing you may be able to get away with some liquid aluminum (similar to liquid weld), or alternately get someone to weld it for you.

Could you post your serial number - I can't find a listing at all for a 96, 125 Mariner - only see them dressed as Merc's for that model year..."

Sure. Ser#og427516. Would the powerhead have to be removed in order to weld and where would the liquid aluminum be found? I will keep you updated on what I find and thank you for your insight.Randy

"Randy, depending on how severe the stress crack is, it may be best and easiest to remove it and work just on the leg by itself.

It may sound a bit daunting, but actually removing the powerhead (pretty much intact) is not an overly difficult job. Once any hoses/lines etc are free of the cowl, it unbolts pretty easily and lifts off without too much effort.

Liquid aluminum can be found at most auto parts places - comes in a (big) tube like toothpaste. It is also available in a (harder) form, in a stick which is molded. I have used both, the tube style usually for cosmetic repairs on legs/lower units (salt burns/gouges) and the latter (stick form) for minor repairs on powerheads (particularly water jackets)....

The more solid form is sold under a few brand names, Starbright is the one I am familiar with."

"Graham, removed lower cowl and looked at midsection today. Severe fracture tracks around base of powerhead just inside bolts. Found one bolt broken. It fell from starboard side, forward hole but had vibrated out. Easy replacement. It had sheared at the nut and had surface rust present so I figure it had been that way awhile. The fracture appears to have been caused from a force coming from behind such as one would back into a wall at half trim. How could such a force cause this midsection fracture (maybe wrong size prop?) I have never seen this type of damage. The mid section must be replaced. Any idea where I could get one? (possibly used) Thanks again. Randy"

"Randy, I guess you have a couple of sources depending on how much you want to spend and how long you want to wait for the part.

You can get the new exhaust housing (leg) from a Merc dealer, even already in the Mariner colour for almost 600 bucks (about 500 at the discount places).

Next option, keep an eye on Ebay, local buy/sell etc - if you wait long enough you can usually find parts and pieces for anything.

Or, if you have an outboard recycler in your area (or one you can get to) - they generally want about 1/2 the cost of a new part (just like most junk yards)..."
