1996 johnson 88hp 4v acceleration issue

I was on the water all morning with no issues and when it was time to head back to the dock my outboard would not accelerate. It turned on just fine and did not stall when put into gear but once I tried to accelerate it would only move at a slow pace. I knew this would take forever to get back to the dock so I decided to push in the key choke to see what would happen and that did the trick. When I would hold the key choke pushed in it would accelerate at full speed but one I released it , it would slow down again to just above and idle. Any help would be very appreciated!

Check fuel for water.-------Using the electric primer valve by-passes the carburetor metering circuits.-----Drain carburetors and have a look at what comes out.----Suspect that carburetors need cleaning.

. I havnt been keeping up with my outboard. It was sitting around for a few months and I didnt run it as frequently as I should have but I did make sure the gas was run out of the engine and didnt leave the gas sitting in there. I also put some stable in the tank before adding new gas. Thanks for the help! I'll post an update as soon as I get it cleaned
