"I have a 1996 88HP Johnson on

"I have a 1996 88HP Johnson on the back of a 1996 Sunbird. The boat ran fine last year. I got it out to get it ready for the summer, and fired it up with some motor muffs. The water pump seems to be working fine, because the water is flowing out of the tell tale/pee hole. However, my alarm went off, and my "Hot" light went on. I felt the engine, and it was warm as expected, and I put my hand in the tell tale to feel the water coming out of the engine. It was cold. I left my hand there for a little, and the water would get HOT then go back to cold. It kept doing this, and the motor was pretty hot to the touch. I thought possibly a thermostat, but I can't find where that is. Can someone help?????"

If your going to do this work

If your going to do this work yourself on this thing you really should invest in a manual for this engine. The thermostat is more then likely frozen shut I always change out my impeller and thermastat every year on my engines. The thermastat on my engine is on the head. But invest in a manual it will save you lots of headaces down the road.

"the pee hole on that engine d

"the pee hole on that engine does not tell you that water is flowing thru the water jacket...all it tells you is the pump is working to some extent and not blocked...it dont tell you anything about the condition of the water pump...another problem is using the muffs..the rpm,s have too be too high to get water thru the engine..i would recommend putting the motor in a large trash can with the lower unit completely submerged..let a hose run in the can to replaced any displaced water...the observe the exhaust ports to see if water is coming out...observe both ports...you can feel this water and see how hot it is and see if there is any difference...i prefer to do this in the water but if you are forced to do something at home then try the trash can..proceed from there...get in the habit of turning the wheel one way and look for spray on both sides hitting the water before leaving the launch..the pee hole on that engine is darn near useless...."
