Hey guys. Seized my 40 horse powerhead. it went under and I did not do a good job in running it and drying it out(thought I did!).

Now I need to rebuild or buy a new PH. Any ideas as to where I can get one?

"May try and look on e-bay to purchase one. Be a little more descriptive about your motor. For example: Model #, and year, just the basics."

"At the moment, to replace or rebuild the powerhead is a unknown.

You've nothing to lose..... tear it down for inspection, then make your decision."

"Sank a few months ago. Engine was off. I got home and ran it for a while on a hose and stored it away. When I returned, it was locked.

Engine is a 1996, like the title says.

I am wondering if it is even worth messing with. I saw a powerhead for $925 today online. I know that a crank alone retails for around $500"

"i would tilt it up high as it

"i would tilt it up high as it would go. pull the plugs and squirt some oil in the cyls (maybe even pull the heads and inspect cyl walls, gaskets are cheap), screw the plugs back in, and let it set for a day or so. then i would remove the plugs and try to manually turn the eng over ......after it breaks free keep oil in the cyl-unplug the main elec plug-jump the starter and spin it for a min or so.....now you can run a compression check and asses the damage.

if your lucky you may get away with it for a while. i have a cousin that bought a boat that had been swamped and later seized and he did what i was telling you and it doesnt even smoke (inboard 454ci). he never told me the comp test results but it is still runnin strong and that was 3 years ago.

you are right parts are outrageous. if your budget is anything like mine you may get away cheaper with a used motor."

"Remove the cylinder head, eng

"Remove the cylinder head, engine tilted up, spray the edges of the pistons with a solution to free rings, fight rust, etc (pick one). Let sit overnight. Later, use a piece of 2x2, 2x4, whatever and a hammer to tap the top of the pistons. You may be lucky that no damage exists to the crankshaft, main bearings etc. Worth a shot, nothing to lose."

"Just another suggestion on fr

"Just another suggestion on freeing a frozen engine. There is an easy way of forcing the mixture of oil and solvent between the piston and cylinder walls. The device pictured may be commercially available but this one was made by brazing an air fitting onto the shell of an old spark plug. You could probably even use the flexible end from a compression tester. The device is used in conjunction with an air compressor to apply 100 or more pounds pressure to the top of the piston. This forces the oil mixture between the piston and the cylinder. At the same time it exerts a downward force of over 600 pounds to the top of a three inch piston. I have used this method many times on 2 and 4 cycle engines and it is usually effective
